Lyndeborough Board of Selectmen accept $73K block grant

LYNDEBOROUGH – On Wednesday. Sept. 21, following a public hearing, the Board of Selectmen accepted a grant of $73,251.80 , a one-time surplus Highway Block grant. The grant is an extension of the annual state Highway Grant and can be used for any highway department expenses. Use of the funds has not yet been decided.

No one attended the hearing.

In other business on Wednesday, Town Administrator Russ Boland was authorized to enter into a contract for road salt at $85.20 per ton. The price is 10 percent over last year. The town uses about 600 tons per year. Spreading equipment is calibrated to meet state standards of the amount used per mile.

Road Agent Rick McQuade said he would like to experiment with pre-treating the road with brine. The board agreed it was a good idea.

Planning Board Alternate Alissa Lavoie was elevated to full membership following the retirement of Paul Best.

It was noted that Julie Zebuhr has resigned as an alternate, leaving two places to be filled.

Selectman Mark Chamberlain was reappointed to the Transportation Committee, with Boland as alternate. Highway safety measures have been discussed with the state Department of Transportation.

Chairman Fred Douglas asked if there is a separate form for temporary driveway permits such as those issued for logging operation. There is.

Douglas said those permits need an expiration date and also a requirement that any stone walls removed must be returned to the original condition. The board agreed.

A map being compiled by the Heritage Commission showing the locations of old cellar holes and stone culverts has been digitized.

Boland said the ambulance bay will remain where it is for the foreseeable future. The new director is holding training sessions with area fire departments.

The board adjourned to visit the Highway Department barn to inspect work done at the salt shed and hear what changes McQuade would like to make.

The next meeting was set for Wednesday, Oct. 5, 6 p.m., in the town office.
