Fire destroys town dump truck

WILTON – On Tuesday, January 3 a fire which has been termed “accidental” destroyed one of the Highway Department’s dump truck and damaged the town garage.

According to a press release, the Fire Department received a call at 7 p.m., and responded to the garage at 89 Whiting Hill Road within two minutes of receiving the call. They found the truck “well involved” inside the building. Additional help was requested.

The fire extended from the truck to the ceiling and roof “causing moderate damage to the building.” The fire appeared to have originated with the truck.

The fire was declared under control at 7:19 p.m.

There was no one in the building at the time and there were no injuries reported to any firemen who responded.

The Fire Department was assisted at the scene by the Wilton Police Department, Wilton Ambulance Service, and a single engine from Milford. Units from Greenville and Lyndeborough stood by at the Wilton Fire Station during the incident.

After the building was cleared, it was turned over the Public Works Director, Mike Tatro.

The cause of the fire appears to be accidental, but an investigation by the Fire Department is on-going.

Tatro said, “We were very fortunate to have such a great fire department.

The truck was a total loss.”
