Sitting on the counter is a no-no at McCrory on the oval, but eight days before her retirement, Caroline Carpentier isn’t worried. The Milford resident has worked at the store since 1951, first as a sales clerk and then as manager.

Today:

In 1989 McCrory had 1,300 stores nationwide. Competition from big-box stores like Walmart and Target began a steady decline for McCrory that included store closings, bankruptcy and eventual end of operations in 2002. As of 2023, Walmart has over 4,600 stores and Target just shy of 2,000.
