Lyndeborough set to name culvert committee

LYNDEBOROUGH – A Culvert Infrastructure Committee will be named by Public Works Director Rick McQuade when he has collected all the needed back information he want, including a survey of the watershed each serves.

“There are some interesting ones,” McQuade told selectmen at their meeting on Wednesday, Jan. 7.

There are 31 culverts 36 inches or bigger scattered across town.

Most of them are corrugated metal but several are granite, concrete, or a concrete box. He wants to know which can be repaired and which shouldo be replaced. He also wants a list of priorities in order to set up a schedule.

“There are 15 problem culverts,” he said. Changing from corrugated metal to smooth plastic will improve flow.

Board Chairman Mark Chamberlain suggested retaining walls are needed in some places. “Thise walls keep debris from collecting.”

McQuade needs to make a list of candidates Chamberlain said, “and we’ll set up the committee.”

McQuade was authorized to proceed. He said he would have it all together “in a month or so.”

In other business on Wednesday, Chamberlain said he had “done some research on the definition of a private road.” While he found standards for construction, he found no clear definition.

Building Inspector Leo Trudeau said he needs one, the difference between a private road and a shared driveway.

The closest he came was, a ” shared driveway” is to houses with frontage on a town road.

On a private road, house lots can have frontage on a that road.

Provisions are made for such roads in subdivisions, but not in other situations, such as off a Class 6 road. Discussions will continue.

Tests for possible contamination of the well at Citizens’ Hall have been made by the town and the state.

The hall, the Fire Station and the Library all use, bottled water for drinking.

The town has received a challenge to a zoning change warrant article which has been forwarded to town counsel. A resident says proper notification was not made in the case.

The next regular meeting of the board was set for Wednesday, Feb. 21, 6 p.m., in the town office.
