Fire Department stairs to be replaced

LYNDEBOROUGH – The stairs at the Fire Department’s emergency exit from the second floor are in need of replacement, but finding someone to do the work has been a problem.

Fire Chief Brian Smith told the Board of Selectmen on Wednesday, Feb. 21, that he had spoken with several area contractors, but they had all said they “were too busy” or “the job is too small.” Building Inspector Leo Trudeau recommended Duplease and Son of Milford.

Estimated cost of the project is $3,700, Smith said, an amount covered by his budget.

The steps are estimated to be about 30 years old, constructed sometime in the 1990s. He was not “afraid of the stairs collapsing,” Smith said, “but they need to be brought up to code.” The stairs are not used as an entrance to the building. The upper level is a meeting room and a place for other fire companies to stay while manning the station during a fire.

The selectmen approved the project. A contract will be offered to the company, Town Administrator Russ Boland said on Thursday.

In other business on Wednesday, Road Agent Rick McQuade was authorized to post weight limits on dirt roads when he feels it is necessary.

Continuing work on the Center (Town) Hall will be discussed at a meeting of the Heritage Commission on Friday, Feb. 23. A determination needs to be made if the Hall can be opened as usual in the spring. Trudeau recommended that the upper level be closed, and heavy items stored there by the Historical Society be removed.

The next meeting of the board was set for Wednesday, March 6, 6 p.m., in the town office.
