LONDONDERRY – A 12-year-old boy became trapped when the sport utility vehicle he was riding in was struck by a falling tree just before noon on June 20.

According to the Londonderry Police Department, officers and fire personnel responded to 27 Stonehenge Rd. at 11:45 a.m. Upon arrival, emergency crews quickly discovered that the boy, who was sitting in the front passenger seat, could not get out on his own.

However, firefighters were able to free him and took him to the hospital with serious, but non-life-threatening injuries. No other injuries were reported.

Police Capt. Patrick Cheetham, who was at the scene, estimated that the tree could have weighed up to 1,000 pounds and was 30-40 feet tall. He also estimated the trunk to be up to 20 inches in diameter.

As a result of strong winds, there were numerous trees and power lines that came down across Londonderry that afternoon.
