YMCA champions water safety in honor of World Drowning Prevention Day

NASHUA – On July 25, the YMCA of Greater Nashua will join global partners in recognizing World Drowning Prevention Day, a United Nations-designated day of awareness and action to address one of the world’s leading–but largely preventable–causes of death.

Every year, drowning claims the lives of over 236,000 people worldwide, with children under the age of five at the greatest risk. This year’s theme, as shared by the U.S. Lifesaving Association, is a reminder that “anyone can drown, but no one should.” Drowning affects every nation, community, age group, and there is no single cause or solution–but education and prevention are key.

“At the YMCA, we see firsthand how water safety education can save lives,” said Lynne Boyer, executive director of Community Impact at the Y. “That’s why we’re committed to teaching children and families how to be safe and confident around water–not just during swim season, but year-round.”

The YMCA’s water safety efforts are amplified through a meaningful partnership with the Wesley’s Way Foundation, established in loving memory of four-year-old Wesley Belisle, who passed away in a tragic accident while vacationing with his family. The foundation honors Wesley by promoting water safety awareness, supporting swim lesson access and advocating for stronger safety measures around bodies of water.

“The Wesley’s Way Foundation reminds us that water safety is a total community effort,” said Derek Belisle, Wesley’s father and president of the foundation’s Board of Directors. “Our mission aligns with the YMCA’s goal to promote youth lifelong healthy living through skills development like swimming.”

Earlier this summer, the YMCA of Greater Nashua and Wesley’s Way Foundation, provided free and subsidized swim lessons to children in need and equipped families with life-saving water safety information. These efforts are part of a global movement to reduce drowning through community engagement, swim education and risk prevention.
