Nashua Historical Society to host tour of Old South Cemetery

NASHUA – As New England joins the nation in marking the 250th anniversary of the American Revolution, the Nashua Historical Society is bringing history to life in an unforgettable way.

Slated for Sept. 6, the Old Souls of the Old South Cemetery Tour will feature reenactors portraying real Colonial and Revolutionary War-era figures buried at Nashua’s oldest burial ground. Led by Paula Lochhead, the Historical Society’s assistant secretary, this immersive event offers a rare opportunity to walk among the patriots and pioneers who helped shape New England.

“This tour is more than a walk through a cemetery–it’s a chance to stand where our patriots once stood and hear their stories in their own words,” said Lochhead. “It’s our way of honoring Nashua’s deep connections to the American Revolution and sharing that history as part of the national REV250 commemoration.”

Before it was Nashua, this area was Old Dunstable, a frontier colonial town chartered in 1673 by the Massachusetts General Court. The Old South Burial Ground, with gravestones dating back to 1687, holds the stories of patriots who fought for American independence, soldiers who served in the French and Indian War, skilled tradesmen and pioneering families who braved the challenges of a new land.

Hear the voice of Rev. Thomas Weld, portrayed by Historical Society President Dean Shalhoup as he recalls his role as Old Dunstable’s first settled minister. Meet the families of Revolutionary War soldiers as well as a colonial stonecutter and his apprentice.

The tour also includes a visit to the restored 1841 Suburban Red Brick Schoolhouse No. 1, located on the cemetery grounds. Inside, a schoolmaster and schoolmarm will recreate the atmosphere of a mid-19th century classroom.

The tour is designed for ages 10 and up and will be held from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Guests are asked to arrive 15 minutes early. The cemetery is located at 217 Daniel Webster Hwy.

Tickets are $20 and can be purchased at https://www.nashuahistoricalsociety.org/event-list. For additional information, call 603-883-0015.
