MANCHESTER – Former New York City Mayor Rudolph Giuliani is recovering after being involved in a car crash on Interstate 93 north on the evening of Aug. 31.

According to State Police, Giuliani, 81, and his driver, Theodore Goodman, were traveling on I-93 south when they were flagged down by a woman on the side of the highway just before exit 9N. The woman reportedly told Giuliani and Goodman that she was the victim of a domestic violence incident. Goodman called police just after 9 p.m. to report the incident. Goodman and Giuliani remained at the scene until state troopers arrived.

Within minutes of leaving the scene, Goodman and Giuliani were struck from behind as they headed north on I-93 in a rented Ford Bronco. As a result of the collision, Giuliani suffered a fractured thoracic vertebra as well as injuries to his left arm and lower leg.

The driver of the other vehicle, a Honda HR-V, was identified as Lauren Kemp, 19, of Concord. She and Goodman both sustained non-life-threatening injuries.

Investigators do not believe that the two incidents are connected. Although he will require a back brace, Giuliani is expected to make a full recovery.

No charges have been filed and the crash remains under investigation.

In 1993, Giuliani defeated incumbent Mayor David Dinkins by two-and-a-half percent and became the first Republican in 20 years to occupy City Hall’s corner office.

During his two terms as New York’s mayor, Giuliani was widely known for his tough policies on crime and was dubbed the “Nanny of New York.” However, his greatest accomplishment came in the months following the 9/11 terrorist attacks. For his leadership during one of the darkest times in American history, Giuliani received an honorary knighthood from Queen Elizabeth II
