NASHUA – Steven Burtman was on duty at a wedding reception when he was shot in the face by Hunter Nadeau at Sky Meadow Country Club on the evening of Sept. 20.

A resident of Lowell, Mass. and Sky Meadow’s food and beverage manager, Burtman was flown to Brigham and Women’s Hospital and was put under sedation for four days.

During that time, Burtman, a Sky Meadow employee since March 2023, underwent two reconstructive surgeries. At this time, he is unable to speak and can only communicate through writing. Although he is expected to make a full recovery, that process will likely take several months.

His friend, Joseph Chaitin, set up a GoFundMe page to help cover medical expenses. It can be accessed at gofundme.com/f/help-us-with-steve-burtmans-recovery.

“Steve has a challenging road ahead,” said Chaitin. “He, his wife and his family will need a lot of support as he works through his recovery from this terrible incident.”

Chaitin also described Burtman as “everyone’s best friend.”

“To know him is to love him. He would do anything for his friends, family, or even someone he just met who happened to be in need,” said Chaitin. “He is the funniest human I personally have ever met. He was one of the first friends I made when I moved to Lowell. He brings joy to everyone he meets.”

Brianna Surette of Georgetown, Mass. suffered a hand laceration and was taken to Southern New Hampshire Medical Center.

She and her husband, Douglas, said they were married at Sky Meadow on Sept. 19, 2020.

“The Surette Family would like to send our deepest condolences to Rob DeCesare’s family and wish them comfort during their unimaginable loss. We also are sending our prayers to Steve Burtman and his family on his recovery, as well as everyone else who experienced this, we are with you. Five years ago and one day before Sept. 20, we celebrated our wedding at Sky Meadow Country Club,” the Surrettes said in a statement. “We never imagined our beautiful memories from that day would be hit with such a tragic event. Although Brianna’s physical injuries will heal, the mental toll will take time, so we respectfully wish for privacy at this time as we try and navigate back into a new normal.”
