CONCORD – New Hampshire once again earned the top national ranking in WalletHub’s 2026 “Best & Worst States for Healthcare” report released today. The annual report evaluates states based on cost, access, and outcomes using 44 key indicators.

According to the report, New Hampshire has the lowest average monthly health insurance premium in the nation at around $469, as well as the second-lowest out-of-pocket medical spending in the country.

“New Hampshire’s recognition as the best state in the nation for healthcare is supported by two measures that are especially important to Granite Staters: the lowest average monthly health insurance premiums in the country and one of the nation’s lowest uninsured rates,” said Insurance Commissioner D.J. Bettencourt. “These results demonstrate that New Hampshire is succeeding in making health coverage both affordable and accessible. The New Hampshire Insurance Department remains committed to protecting consumers and supporting a stable, competitive insurance market that continues to deliver value for residents.”

The Granite State has the 10th-most nurses per capita, the fifth-most physician assistants per capita, and the most urgent care centers per capita that are certified by the Urgent Care Association of America. New Hampshire also has a strong overall health profile, with the fourth-lowest share of residents with heart attacks, the lowest prevalence of strokes, and the fourth-lowest prevalence of type-2 diabetes in the country.

“This ranking recognizes the important role that every resident, family and community plays in ensuring our state’s health,” said Commissioner Lori Weaver of the Department of Health and Human Services. “The ranking also celebrates the strength of New Hampshire’s frontline healthcare workforce, particularly nurses and physician assistants. While this ranking reflects the strength of our state overall, we continue to work with Governor Ayotte and other state agencies to expand the quality and accessibility of healthcare in every community of the state.”
