From a pool of 91 U.S. senators evaluated by the Political Grades Project, U.S. Sen. Maggie Hassan (D-NH) recently emerged as the nation’s most effective senator.

Others in the top 10 included U.S. Sens. Mike Rounds (R-SD), who placed second, Amy Klobuchar (D-MN), who placed third, Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH), who placed fifth, and Ed Markey (D-MA), who placed seventh.

“My top priority in the Senate is getting results for the people of New Hampshire. I am committed to working across the aisle to build lasting solutions to the challenges our families and businesses face,” said Hassan. “I will continue working every day to represent our state’s Live Free or Die values and make life better and more affordable for Granite Staters.”

A nonpartisan organization, Political Grades recognizes members of both the Senate and the House of Representatives. A series of metrics are taken into account to determine who sits atop each list. Those metrics include the number of bills they have helped advance, how the state has benefited during the member’s time in office and attendance.

After serving four years as governor, Hassan ran for U.S. Senate in 2016 against Republican incumbent Kelly Ayotte. Following a ferocious campaign, Hassan narrowly defeated Ayotte by 1,017 votes. The 2022 election yielded a much greater margin of victory as Hassan defeated Republican challenger Don Bolduc by 56,859 votes.

According to Congress.gov, since taking office nearly 10 years ago, Hassan has sponsored and co-sponsored more than 3,500 bills, resolutions and amendments. Some of them include the No Surprises Act, the PACT Act and the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law. Earlier this year, the Increasing Transparency in Generic Drug Applications Act and the Patients Before Middlemen Act were signed into law. Both pieces of legislation are designed to lower prescription drug prices and streamline the approval process for generic drugs.

In 2024, the Bridge Pledge Organization named Hassan as a Bridge Builder. She was also named the most bipartisan member of Congress by the Common Ground Committee. In addition, Hassan received the Bipartisan Public Service Award from the Portman Center for Policy Solutions at the University of Cincinnati.
