CBY students present workshops
Courtney Byer, Sam Carkin, Jim Foley and Ben DiNardo, members of the Coalition for Bedford Youth, had the pleasure of presenting three workshops at the Ross A. Lurgio Middle School’s “Stand by Me” Workshop on June 4. They are graduates of the “Stand by Me” program and currently attend Bedford High School.
The mission of the CBY Task Development team is to provide a safe and fun environment, encourage mutual respect between self and others, and provide a strong voice for the youth of Bedford through activities and community service. These teens not only accomplished their task, but also lit the “spark” of many seventh-graders and their parents as they played an ice-breaker game, snowball activity and blue wristband activity.
Give someone a blue wristband and be a valued asset builder. Join CBY. Visit CBYNH.org for more information and see how you can have fun making a difference.
Teens set to take stage in ‘Copacabana’
Four Bedford teens take to the stage when the Teen Actorsingers present Barry Manilow’s musical, “Copacabana,” where the story of Lola the showgirl, her lover Tony and the notorious diamond-wearing Rico will be brought to life. There will be four performances: 8 p.m. July 30 and matinees at 2 p.m. July 31 and Aug. 1. All will be held at Nashua High School South, 36 Riverside Drive, Nashua.
The story is about Stephen, a playwright who is in the process of creating a musical production about Lola Lamar, a farm girl from Oklahoma who comes to New York with aspirations of becoming a world-famous Copa Girl. Upon her arrival at the nightclub, she befriends Tony Forte, a handsome singer/songwriter/bartender; Gladys, a retired Copa Girl who now works as the cigarette girl; and Sam, the gruff, yet lovable manager of the club. The plot twists and turns when Lola is kidnapped and taken to Havana by Rico, where he owns the also world-famous Tropicana Nightclub. He wants to make Lola his new star, much to the dismay of Conchita Alvarez, his long-standing leading lady (played by Bedford’s own Emma Benson).
The cast consists of 32 talented youngsters from the Nashua area ranging in age from 13-19, including Benson, Hannah Benson, Jennifer Ryder and Christian Seasholtz, of Bedford.
Tickets may be purchased online at www.actorsingers.org and clicking on the “Tickets” link on the left or by calling 320-1870. Reserved ticket prices are $15 for adults and $12 for students and seniors.
Bedford teen earns dance scholarship
Southern New Hampshire Youth Ballet, a nonprofit organization and the affiliate performing company of Southern NH Dance Theater, congratulates 14-year-old Erika Davis, of Bedford, for receiving scholarships at this year’s Regional Dance American Northeast Festival in Pittsburgh in May.
Evaluated in the spring of 2005, SNHYB is the first company from New Hampshire – and currently the only company from New England – to be accepted into this prestigious organization. Since 2005, SNHYB dancers have participated in RDA’s annual Northeast Festival, which is held in a different city within the Northeast region of the United States. Member companies and their dancers participate in three days of master classes with renowned teachers from professional companies and are seen by directors, choreographers and other dance professionals from around the world. SNHYB dancers also perform at each festival.
Davis, a freshman at Bedford High School, has been dancing for 12 years and four of those years at Southern NH Dance Theater. She has also trained with School of American Ballet, Briansky Saratoga Ballet, Central Pennsylvania Youth Ballet and Walnut Hill School. She received a tuition scholarship to the Philadelphia Dance Theater Summer Program.
“Like Southern NH Youth Ballet, Philadelphia Dance Theater is a performing member of Regional Dance America Northeast,” said Patricia Lavoie, artistic director at Southern NH Dance Theater. “We are so proud of all of our dancers.”
Bedford teens take on ‘Drowsy Chaperone’
The Roaring ’20s are back and better than ever. The most celebrated musical of the 2006 Broadway season, “The Drowsy Chaperone,” a completely original musical comedy, is being performed by the Derryfield Repertory Theatre Company for two weekends only, July 23-25 and July 30-Aug. 1. The music and lyrics offer a modern take on classic comedy.
Bedford residents Daniel and Nathan Schwartzberg and Andrew Barret Cox are appearing in this production. No strangers to the stage, all three have appeared in Palace Theatre professional productions, as well as local community, teen and school productions. The Schwartzbergs represented their schools in the chorus at the NH All-State Music Festival this year. Cox was busy choreographing for local musical theater productions and pageants.
Last month, the cast went to see a production of “The Drowsy Chaperone” in Maine starring Carson Kressley. They all had a chance to meet with the cast following the show and learn a bit from the professionals about playing the roles in the musical.
Excited to be involved in such a fun show, all three are enjoying the challenge of preparing a show in just a month’s time. This production requires the actors to rollerskate, tap dance, do the splits, and execute complicated vaudeville routines. Cox will continue to pursue his theater dreams at Emerson College in the fall. The Schwartzbergs are still in high school, but keep your eyes open: Daniel has been invited to audition for “American Idol” this summer.
“The Drowsy Chaperone” will be performed at The Derryfield School Theatre, 2108 River Road, Manchester. Showtimes are 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday. The Sunday show is at 2 p.m. Tickets are $15 and may be purchased at Etix.com or the box office at the theater prior to the show.
