CONCORD – Now that summer is almost officially upon us, the NH Fish and Game Department reminds outdoor enthusiasts to use caution on the trails and to support search and rescue by purchasing a Hike Safe Card. The card is valuable for anyone hiking, paddling, cross country skiing or engaging in other outdoor recreation.

Purchase voluntary hike safe cards online at nhfishandgame.com/HikeSafe.aspx; in person at the Fish and Game Department, 11 Hazen Drive, Concord; or by using the print-and-mail form at: wildnh.com/safe/documents/hike-safe-app.pdf.

The cards are $25 for an individual, or $35 for a family (parents and minor children), and are good through the end of the calendar year. All funds raised through the sale of hike safe cards go to Fish and Game’s Search and Rescue Fund.

People who obtain the cards are not liable to repay rescue costs if they need to be rescued. An individual may still be liable for response expenses if the actions that created to need for the emergency response meet criteria set forth by legislation (RSA 206:26-bb).

In recent years, Fish and Game has conducted an average of about 180 search and rescue missions each year. In 2016, over 4,000 hike safe cards were sold, bringing in over $107,000 to the search and rescue fund.

Fish and Game law enforcement reminds hikers that, even in late spring, winter conditions may prevail in high elevation areas of the White Mountains, so outdoor enthusiasts should bring appropriate gear, check the weather, and use caution.
