FIRST team wins state championship

The NHTreme Team, of Mont Vernon, earned the first-place Champion’s Award and the first-place Robot Performance Award at the 2011 New Hampshire FIRST LEGO League State Championship Tournament.

The tournament, sponsored by BAE Systems, was held at Central High School in Manchester on Dec. 3.

The Champion’s Award is the most prestigious recognition awarded to the team that exhibits strength in all FLL areas, including core values, teamwork, robot design, robot performance and research project.

The students are now invited to attend the FIRST LEGO League World Championships in St. Louis, Mo., in April where they will compete with the top 80 teams selected from 20,000 teams worldwide.

The seven-member team is made up of students from the Mont Vernon Village School, Amherst Middle School and The Academy for Science and Design.

Members include Elizabeth Apple, Bryan Rose, Brian Apple, Tony Edvalson, Nick Zumbo, Annemarie Edvalson and Rylee Noorda. The Team is coached by Eric and Maria Edvalson.

FIRST LEGO League – For Innovation and Recognition of Science and Technology – is an international program that seeks to encourage an interest in science, math and technology among students ages 9-14, and is based in Manchester.
