Mother-daughter book bonding at library

It’s so hard these days for parents to spend quality time with their children. Between work, after school activities, and the distractions of everyday life sometimes quality time with children can take a back seat. When it comes to mothers and their daughters time together can be especially cherished, but when they reach those teenage years’ time together gets harder and harder. Mother-daughter book clubs are a great way to not only spend time with your daughters, but bond with them over the love of reading.

Here at the Hollis Social Library we are starting our own Mother-Daughter Book Club based on the popular Mother-Daughter Book Club series by Heather Vogel Frederick. This book club is designed for girls in grades 5-8 and their mothers. The meetings will be the third Wednesday of every month January-November. The first meeting will be held Jan. 18 at 6 p.m. Pizza and drinks will be served. Members are welcome to bring food to the meetings so everyone can have dinner together, and get to know each other over some casual dining.

This book club was created with the help of a very enthusiastic fifth-grade Girl Scout; so the book club will have a fun energetic, but relaxed feel to it. Both mothers and their daughters will be encouraged to give their opinions on the books and discussion questions at the meetings. Everyone is to bring their favorite book to the first meeting to share why you love the book so much. This will help the group get a feel for the type of books members like to read. Books will be distributed at every meeting, and our first read will be the first Mother-Daughter Book Club book.

Reading the same book together and discussing it with others is an excellent way for mothers and daughters to connect with each other. Sharing thoughts and opinions on books lets mothers and daughters understand how each other feels and thinks. Reading books about strong female characters and books written by female authors also shows girls good role models they can look up to. When those teenage years start creeping up maintaining a connection between both parent and child is important, and can be the basis for a lasting relationship for the future.
