Student a finalist in fashion competition

Teresa Calabro, a Fisher College student from Merrimack, has been selected as a finalist in the Boston Symphony Orchestra’s Project Debussy, a unique fashion competition featuring evening wear inspired by the music of the composer Claude Debussy.

The contest was scheduled in conjunction with Boston Symphony Orchestra concerts featuring Debussy’s “La Mer,” on Feb. 2 at Symphony Hall.

Calabro, a freshman at Fisher, and 10 other fashion students in the greater Boston area, were scheduled to present their evening wear with models of their choosing, allowing Boston Symphony Orchestra patrons to view and vote on the dresses before the concert. The winner of Project Debussy will be announced at a special post-concert fashion event, and stands to bring home a $1,000 dollar grant from the French Cultural Center of Boston.

Calabro’s evening gown consists of a dropped waist corset and an A-line skirt. The corset is a deep-navy brocatelle with a crinkled texture. The back of the corset is laced with organza, and the skirt of the gown is made of satin.

“As I listened to ‘Claire de Lune,’ by Claude-Achille Debussy, played by pianist Pierto Rigacci, I found myself enveloped with a feeling of romance. The piece is delicate, yet passionate, as emotions often are in the courtships of lovers. I intend to recreate this romanticism in my evening gown,” Calabro said.

The skirt, covered with hand-made fabric flowers, which are made up of multiple circles of navy silk organza, are sewn with a bead in the center. The flowers are hand stitched to the skirt, with the flower sizes gradually becoming larger as they near the hem.

“The silk flowers will flutter with each step, just as the notes of ‘Claire de Lune’ rise and fall in smooth succession. Each flower represents the singular piano strokes, coming together to create a beautiful whole,” she said.

“Teresa is one of our most brilliant design students enrolled in the fashion program here at Fisher,” said Dr. Thomas McGovern, president of Fisher . “We are very proud to have her as a finalist in the Boston Symphony’s Project Debussy competition and we wish her the best of luck.”
