Library wins club’s contest

The Merrimack Public Library has won a Book Club Kit Giveaway contest which included 10 free copies of Caroline Starr Rose’s debut novel “May B.,” and a free visit with the author via Skype.

“May B.” is a children’s novel set on the Kansas frontier. It tells the story of a young girl who, while helping out on a neighbor’s homestead, experiences a terrible turn of events that leaves her alone facing the approaching winter.

The book has earned starred reviews from Kirkus Reviews and Publishers Weekly.

Initially, the books will only be available to participants of the Junior Book Group and Family Book Group. Participants in each group will then be invited to attend the Skype visit with Caroline Starr Rose. The Junior Book Group will discuss “May B.” at 6:30 p.m., Monday, March 5. On Monday, March 19, the Junior Book Group will join the Family Book Group for their discussion at 6:30 p.m., and the author’s Skype visit at 7 p.m. The Children’s Room at the library will have extra copies of the book available to book group participants during the month before the meeting date. The groups are open to Merrimack Library cardholders; registration is required. Register by phone at 424-5021 or online at www.merrimack.lib.nh.us.

The Merrimack Library was nominated for this prize by resident Jennifer Jobin, who has participated in the library’s Family Book Groups for more than six years. The purpose of these monthly groups is for children and their parents to read the same book then join with others for discussion. In her nomination letter, Jobin wrote that taking part in the book group has helped her children develop reading and comprehension skills that positively impact their school work.
