New Boston Post Cane holder sought

The Town of Merrimack has begun the search for the oldest resident to become the new Boston Post Cane holder. Our last Cane holder, Nellie Granger (age 97) passed away on December 17, 2018. The Boston Post Cane tradition started in 1909, when the Boston Post newspaper delivered the gold-headed ebony canes to 700 towns in New England and requested the canes be presented to the oldest citizen in town and passed on to the next oldest when he or she dies. This year is a momentous one because the Town is celebrating its 275th anniversary in April. The cane will be awarded in conjunction with this celebration. To qualify as the oldest resident, one must be a physical resident of Merrimack and have resided in Merrimack for at least 25 years. If you qualify or know someone who does, send a nomination form to: Town of Merrimack, ATTN: Boston Post Cane, 6 Baboosic Lake Road, Merrimack, NH 03054. Nomination forms are available at www.merrimacknh.gov/bostonpostcane or at Town Hall. Please contact the Town Manager’s office with questions at 603-424-2331 or kwardner@merrimacknh.gov. The Town will be accepting nominations until Friday, March 12, 2021. Thank you for your help in locating our next holder of the Boston Post Cane.
