Merrimack man rescued from White Mountains
LOW AND BURBANK’S GRANT – Brian Stevens, 54, of Merrimack, suffered a lower leg injury while descending Lowe’s Path in southern Coos County on the afternoon of March 15.
According to the state Department of Fish and Game, at approximately 2 p.m., conservation officers were notified that Stevens, who was with three other hikers, could not put any weight on his injured leg. At the time, he and the other hikers were two-and-a-half miles from U.S. Rt. 2.
A team from Androscoggin Valley Search and Rescue responded to the scene along with caretakers from the Randolph Mountain Club and the Gray Knob Cabin.
While waiting for rescue, Stevens was able to use snow and ice to slide nearly half a mile closer to the trailhead with assistance from the other hikers.
When rescuers arrived at the scene, Stevens was put on a litter and was carried for two miles, arriving at Rt. 2 by 7:30 p.m. He chose not to be taken to the hospital.
According to Fish and Game officials, he and the other hikers had all the appropriate gear for a late winter hike.
