Richard Alan Medlyn

Richard Alan Medlyn passed away peacefully with his family by his side on Saturday, February 20, 2021 after a 6 month battle with Cholangiocarcinoma. He was born in Nashua, N.H. on June 19,1952 to William A. and Pearl T. Medlyn. Richard was raised in Milford, N.H. where he later worked for his parents at Medlyn Monument Company. He graduated from Milford High School in 1970 and then furthered his education in Melbourne, Florida at the Florida Institute of Technology where he graduated with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Marine Biology and a Masters Degree in Environmental Ecology. While in college he joined The Lamba Chi Alpha Fraternity. Richard met his Love, Barbara Sue Nichols of Cocoa Beach, Florida while in college, they married on June 14, 1975. They celebrated their 45th wedding anniversary this past summer.

Richard worked as a Marine Biologist at the Department of Natural Resources in St. Petersburg, Florida for several years before taking a job at the Strategic Oil Reserve in New Orleans, Louisiana. Soon after, they had their daughter, Nicole Medlyn. The new family then moved up to Milford, N.H. to take over his parents’ business, Medlyn Monument Company, becoming the Third Generation Owners. Not too long after, their son, Adam Medlyn, was born into the family (now soon to be the fourth generation owner). In later years, Richard enjoyed coaching the MCAA girls Softball Team and several MCAA Youth Soccer Teams. He also served the Town of Milford as a Selectman and member of the Planning Board.

Richard and Barbara opened The Quartz Source Rock and Mineral Shop in 1999 where he could use his “Science Brain” and love for the out of doors. Their family grew to include spouses and 3 Grandchildren.

They traveled to Florida in the winter and spent summers at their camp in Deering, N.H., enjoying the best of both seasons. Richard loved sports, music, fishing, oystering, clamming, shrimping, rock collecting and telling stories of his “Nine Lives” Adventures, including his Monster Fish Marathon. Most of all, he LOVED being with his family.

Richard was LOVED and CHERISHED by his family and friends. He is survived by his wife, Barbara Sue Nichols Medlyn, their daughter and spouse Nicole E. and Luis Garcia, their daughters Audriana (age 12) and Brenna (age 11), their son, Adam T. Medlyn and Partner, Megan Doughty, and their daughter, Aeris Doughty Medlyn (age 4), all of Milford, NH.

Barbara and Richard were quite fittingly called Ya-Ya and Yoda.

Richard loved to be Footloose. He is and always will be sorely missed by his family and friends. Come what may, his wife Barbara will LOVE HIM till the end of time.

A private Celebration of Life will be held at a later date. Arrangements are in the care of Smith & Heald Funeral Home, 63 Elm Street, Milford, NH. To share a memory or offer a condolence, please go to www.smith-heald.com.
