Richard Bryan Kalin

Permaculture Specialist, Flower Essence Magician, Gardener, Farmer, Tech Guru & Muffin Maker

August 24, 1946 – March 29, 2016

Richard died peacefully on March 29th, 2016. He is survived by his wife Toby Tarnow; brother Jeff Kalin; sister Rebecca Kalin; and their respective families.

Born in New York City to Catherine (Bryan) Kalin and Victor Kalin, Richard grew up in Norwalk, Connecticut. His father was an artist and his mother an entrepreneur. He went to Phillips Academy in Andover, Harvard College and graduated with a Ph.D. in Applied Mathematics in 1972. During high school he worked at IBM, and during college at Massachusetts Institute of Technology Lincoln Laboratory. Upon graduation, he joined Digital Equipment Corporation, where he worked for 17 years. In 1990, he started his own technology company, Unity Networking.

Richard lived in Hollis, New Hampshire, for the last 40 years. He was active in land preservation and was a dedicated member of The Temple-Wilton Community Farm, serving on its board as a member and president. Richard had an unusual gift with plants, flowers and trees and was always looking for ways to harness their particular magic.
