Teams need support for trip

They’re going to Kansas City, Kansas City here they come. With apologies to the late great Wilbert Harrison, we bring you this reminder that two Milford Destination Imagination teams are trying to raise the funds they need to go to the global finals in Kansas City, Missouri at the end of this month, and a further reminder that it’s not too late for you to help them.

One easy and fun way is to go to the Milford Fishing Derby at Railroad Pond this Saturday where the DI teams will be hosting a bake sale. You’ll get to buy homemade snacks and maybe get to see some lucky kids catch some unlucky fish.

DI is a terrific contest that helps students develop creative, critical thinking and problem solving skills through a series of challenges under time pressure. If you’ve ever seen the teams in action, you know what a challenge it is.

But once they’ve overcome that and, as in the case of the Milford teams – one from the middle school, one from the high school – do it well enough to qualify for the globals, they have another challenge – raising a lot of money to get to the next level.

For starters, it’s $5,500 for each team just to register.

And this year, because it’s in Missouri, not Tennesse, travel expenses are higher, bringing the cost of air fare and accommodations for students and chaperones to around $2,000 per person.

It’s not easy for the students to raise that kind of money but in the past, when local teams have qualified for DI globals, they’ve somehow managed to do it.

Not on their own, of course, and that’s where you come in.

If you can’t make the bake sale, you can send a check to Milford Destination Imagination, Milford High School, 100 West St., Milford 03055.

If you want to support a particular team, note that on your check.
