GIRLS BASKETBALL

Souhegan 53, Portsmouth 38

Jane White scored a game-high 16 points to lead the Sabers past the Clippers in Amherst.

Christan Wojtas added 10 points, while Bailey Gendron chipped in with nine, including two 3-pointers.

Newmarket 58, Wilton-Lyndeborough 51

The Mules went 17 of 22 from the foul line in the fourth quarter, off-setting an 18-point, 14-rebound night on the part of Wilton’s Kalie Randlett. Alex Bosquet added nine points for the Warriors, who fell to 7-8.

WRESTLING

Goffstown 47, Milford 28

Joe Pellitteri, Connor Borne, Joe Albina, Tyler Keating and Andrew Bellantoni all scored wins for Milford, but the Spartans came up on the short end of the final score against Goffstown at home.

Hollis/Brookline 67, Souhegan 6

Cameron Crook recorded the Sabers only win with a pin at 215 pounds, as the Cavaliers ran away with an easy home win on the mat.

Tyler Pickard (119 pounds), Ryan Ahlquist (125), Jake McPherson (140), Taylor Landry (152), Forrest Coon-Roberts (171), Nate Ashe (189) and Zach Migneault (285) picked up pinning wins for the Cavs.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Newmarket 59, Wilton-Lyndeborough 54

AJ Gersky had 13 points and Adam Edmunds and Aaron Davis added 10 points apiece for the Warriors, who fell to 6-6 thanks in part to 32 points by Newmarket’s Adrian Edgerly.

Souhegan seventh

at Division II girls meet

The Saber Girls took sixth place in both the Giant Slalom and Slalom events at the Division II State Championships at Cranmore Mountain.

Leading the team in Slalom was Samantha Prue with a 15th place finish and a two-run time of 84.12 seconds, Emy Ezequelle in 26th (95.97), AJ Newell 32nd (99.99) and Emily Ballantyne 33rd (100.04).

Samantha Prue took the top team spot in Giant Slalom as well with a 20th place finish (91.04), followed closely by AJ Newell in 21st (91.94), Emy Ezequelle in 30th (96.98) and Emily Ballantyne in 34th (98.99).

Souhegan also had a solid showing in seventh, while Milford finished 15th in the event won by Kennett. Plymouth and Hanover rounded out the top three.

NORDIC SKIING

Sabers girls third,

boys fourth at D-II meet

Brant Mullens and Rachel Springmann both qualified to ski in the Meet of Champions with strong days at the Division II Nordic Ski Championships on Wednesday.

Souhegan finished fourth on the boys side with 342 points, coming in behind champion Hanover (378.5), Kennett (376) and Lebanon (358) and ahead of Plymouth (337), Kingswood (311), Con-Val (302.5) and Bedford (299).

Mullens was fifth in Classical and ninth in freestyle to earn his Meet of Champions spot.

The Sabers were third in girls action with 350 points. Hanover won the girls title as well with 390 points, followed by Lebanon with 370. Coming in behind the Sabers were Kingswood (328), Bedford (322), Con-Val (313), Bishop Guertin (306), Plymouth (290) and Kennett (170).

Springmann was 10th in classical and ninth in skate to lock up her position in the Meet of Champions.

WRESTLING

Milford 48, Pelham 24

Joe Pellitteri wrestled up a weight class and recorded a big win at 135 pounds – pinning his Pelham opponent in 4 minutes, 46 seconds – as the Spartans doubled up on the Pythons in Pelham.

Connor Borne also recorded a pin for Milford at 145 pounds, as did Joe Albina and Tyler Keating at 160 and 189, respectively.

The Spartans take to the mat again Saturday at 9:30 a.m. as they host a six-team meet, which includes Souhegan, Plymouth, Salem, Newfound and Nashua North.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Souhegan 62, Windham 46

Seth Cordts had a spectacular game, including 19 points, to lead the Sabers to a road victory over Windham. Sean McGrath added 13 and Nick Hession eight for Souhegan (8-3).

Milford 83, Con-Val 52

Undefeated Milford, now 14-0, romped in Peterborough with 12 scorers led by Mike O’Loughlin with 20 points, Jamie Holder with 16, and Mike Mitchell with 10.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Souhegan 49, Windham 30

Ceara McNamara had an outstanding defensive game and finished with 11 points for the Sabers, who stayed unbeaten at 12-0.

The Sabers Jane White led all scorers in the game with 13 points. Teammate Bailey Gendron chipped in with 11, including a pair of 3-pointers.

BOYS HOCKEY

Souhegan 8,

Monadnock 1

Souhegan’s trip to Cheshire County quickly turned into a romp as the Sabers thrashed the Monadnock Huskies by a seven goal margin in Swanzey on Saturday.

The Sabers received a pair of hat tricks junior Dan Conroy and freshman Mike Hayden while juniors Joe Stacy and Tomas Chvalny each chipped in a goal a piece.

While sophomore netminder Ryan Peterson wasn’t able to achieve the shutout, he did stop 25 pucks in the victory.

WRESTLING

North excels, Spartans falter in Milford

It was a tough day for the Milford Spartans on the mats as their wrestlers lost their three matches against Nashua North, Plymouth and Salem at home on Saturday.

The Spartans lost to Salem by a pin and by even less to North, who finished their day with two other victories against Plymouth and a truncated match against Newfound Regional.

Heavyweight Andrew Bellantoni and 160 pounder Joe Albina had perfect 3-0 days for the Spartans while Marcel LaPlante earned two pins at 112 pounds and Doug McQuaid earned pins at 140 and 145 pounds for North.

Sabers boys fourth

at indoor championships

The Souhegan Sabers boys track and field team, with fine performances by all three relay teams, finished fourth in the Division II, III, and IV Championships held at Dartmouth College. Final scores of the top 10 teams were Oyster River 61, Monadnock 54, Milford 48, Souhegan 38, Lebanon 28, Merrimack Valley 27, Bedford 23, Bow 23, Campbell 20, and St. Thomas 16. The 4 by 400 relay team of Jake Kittredge, Aaron Prescott, Bert DeForest, and Tanner Kent set a new school record with their winning time of 3:36.36. The 4 by 200 meter relay team of Parker Hall, James Sheldon, Dennis Elverson, and Chris Chininis also was first with a time of 1:36.17. The Saber team of Jake, Tanner, Bert, and Pat Lynch also ran to a school record with their second place finish in the 4 by 800 (8:31.79). The remaining team points were scored by Andy Coates in the high jump (4th at 6’ 0”), Bert DeForest in the 600 meters (4th at 1:28.27), Chris Chininis in the 55 meter dash (6th at 6.87), and Dennis Elverson in the 300 meters (6th at 37.79 – a personal best).

The girls’ meet was won by Lebanon 58, followed by Portsmouth 33, Merrimack Valley 32, Oyster River 31, Milford 30, Coe-Brown 28, Hanover 23, Laconia 23 and Souhegan 22. Isabella Stuopis once again led the Saber girls with another school record in the shot. Her toss of 39’ 10 3/4” was good for second place and will surely qualify her for the New England meet. Angela Blume ran to third place in the 600 meters with a personal best time of 1:41.85. She combined efforts with three freshmen in the 4 by 800 meters (Sarah Hurd, Katharine Tebbetts, and Rebecca Mirhashem) to receive the third place medals in that event. The 4 by 200 meter relay team of Kelsey Knight, Jade Humphreys, Courtney Hopp, and Taylor Behn also scored points with a fifth place time of 1:53.27.

Individuals and relay teams that placed in the top six places, when combined with the Division I Meet, will all qualify for the New England Track & Field Meet to be held at the Reggie Lewis Center in Boston on Friday, March 4.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Souhegan 57, John Stark 43

Jane White and Christin Wojtas each scored seven points in a decisive fourth quarter as the Sabers stayed unbeaten at 13-0. White finished with 19 points, eight assists, eight steals and seven rebounds while Wojtas finished with 16 points. The Sabers outscored Stark 19-8 in the fourth quarter.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Souhegan 63, John Stark 58

The visiting Sabers got 13 points from Devin Gilligan and 12 from Seth Cordts while outscoring John Stark 19-14 in the final quarter to improve to 9-3. Brandon Len added 11 points while Ben Petersen blocked seven shots.
