HANOVER — Sarah Frye went out in style.

The former Nashua High School North standout, playing her final game with her sister Allie as a teammate, scored both goals to win the Most Valuable Player in New Hampshire’s 2-1 win over Vermont in the annual Twin State Lions Cup Soccer Game.

For the second year in a row, both New Hampshire boys and girls Lions Cup Soccer teams won their matches. The Granite State boys won 5-1, matching their record for most goals in a single game. The New Hampshire girls earned their fourth win in five years.

The NH Boys got off to a fast start, with Bedford’s Ali Mirza scoring in the 4th minute, assisted by Hopkinton’s Finan Murphy. Murphy made the lead 2-0 with a solo score at 15:57. Mouad Yzzogh of Derryfield scored on a penalty kick 5:27 into the second half to increase the led before Vermont collected their only goal on a shot by Will Curtis.

Leo Sochanek of Londonderry scored a solo goal to give NH a 4-1 lead, and Woodsville’s Shawn Walker scored with 13:49 left for the fifth NH goal. It was only the fifth time in 51 years that the NH team had tallied a total of five goals.

All-American Sarah Frye of Nashua North scored twice in the first half to give the NH girls a lead they would never surrender. Vermont pulled to within a goal back with only two minutes gone in the second half, but could come no closer. Frye, who was named as NH’s Most Valuable Player, was denied a hat trick by an amazing save by Vermont’s Randi Fortin with 7:15 left. NH goalkeeper Maizie Angles of Lebanon made a big save on a free kick to preserve the lead for New Hampshire.

The NH boys win increased their lead in the overall series to 22-19, with 10 ties. The win for the NH girls increased their lead to 21-18, with 4 draws.

Derryfield’s Yzzogh was honored as the NH Most Valuable Player. Bishop Guertin defender Liam Ireland was selected for the Sportsmanship Award, and Ciaran Duffy of Bow was the winner of the 12th Player Award.

In addition of Frye’s selection as MVP, goalkeeper Sadi Scruton of Coe-Brown was the girls Sportsmanship winner, and Allison Harb of Timberlane was chosen as the 12th Player.

Despite the occasional rain showers, attendance at the games was at a five-year high. This was the sixth consecutive year that the matches have been held at Hanover High School, following a year off due to Covid. The NH Lions Twin State Soccer Association has raised nearly $900,000 over 51 years for sight and hearing charities in Vermont and New Hampshire.

Kearsarge High School coach Couper Gunn, the NH Boys Coach of the Year in Division III, was Head Coach for the Boys. Tim St. Pierre, who led the Stevens girls to an undefeated championship season, was the girls head coach.
