Robotics Competition

Milford-based FIRST Robotics Competition team, Mechanical Mayhem, captained the winning alliance at the Granite State New England District Event presented by BAE Systems on March 1-2 in Salem. The team will compete April 5-6 at the Pine Tree District Event in Lewiston, Maine where they hope to secure an invitation to the New England District Championship, April 11-13 in Worcester, Massachusetts. The Milford team was also recognized for its gracious professionalism. FIRST is a nonprofit organization advancing science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) with hands-on robotics challenges for students in grades K-12. Under strict rules and limited time and resources, teams of high school students are challenged to build industrial-size robots to play a field game in alliance with other teams, while also fundraising to meet their goals, designing a team ‘brand,’ and advancing respect and appreciation for STEM within the local community. For this year’s challenge, Destination Deep Space, teams collecting samples on Planet Primus. Two competing alliances combat unpredictable terrain and weather patterns, making remote robot operation essential to their mission on the planet. With only two minutes and thirty seconds until liftoff, the alliances gathered as many cargo pods as possible and prepare their spaceships for departure before the next sandstorm arrives.
