Maj. Robert Phillips

Milford physician Maj. Robert Phillips served in the U.S. Army Medical Corps during World War II. An Army Reserve officer with four children, he had been called to active duty after the attack on Pearl Harbor and was on Bataan Island when the Japanese engulfed it. He was prompted from captain to major partly as the result of successful forays for food for the men under his charge. News of his death, from malaria and malnutrition, reached Milford on Sept. 1, 1942.
