Vermont blanks NH Shrine team

Make it two in a row for Vermont.

Fair Haven’s Dylan Ellis scored a pair of touchdowns and Vermont stifled New Hampshire for a 19-0 victory in the 64th Shrine Maple Sugar Bowl on Saturday evening at Spartan Stadium in Castleton, Vt.

It’s the second straight victory in the series for the Green Mountain State, which won last year’s contest by a 50-2 margin.

After a scoreless first quarter, Mill River’s Mike Morgan kicked his first of two field goals to give Vermont a 3-0 edge in the second quarter. Ellis scored his first touchdown on a 12-yard scamper, which supplied Vermont with a 10-0 cushion by the end of the first half, which featured a combined five lost fumbles.

The score remained 10-0 through the third quarter, but Morgan’s 30-yard field goal early in the fourth made it 13-0. The Green Mountain state sealed it with 9:02 to go when Ellis broke loose for a 17-yard rushing touchdown and made it 19-0.

Local players expected to suit up for New Hampshire included Tylor Chase (Nashua North), Jeff Baldassari (Nashua North), Dylan Fagan (Bishop Guertin), Harrison Vedrani (Campbell), Justin Weiser (Merrimack), Jason Theriault (Merrimack), Jack Byrne (Hollis Brookline) and Nashua native Joe Bernard (Bishop Brady).
