Manchester man nabbed for wrong-way driving in Bedford

BEDFORD – Benjamin Smith, 25, of Manchester, was taken into custody on Oct. 26 for allegedly driving the wrong way on Interstate 293 and the F.E. Everett Turnpike.

According to State Police, at 1:07 a.m., troopers were alerted that Smith, who was driving a 2012 Honda Civic, was traveling the wrong way on I-293 in Manchester. Smith was said to be in the northbound lanes near exit 5 travelling southbound.

Trooper Madelynn Theve responded to the alert and found Smith travelling the wrong way on the F.E. Everett Turnpike in Bedford. She was able to pull him over and took him into custody without incident.

Smith has been charged with reckless conduct with a deadly weapon and driving while intoxicated.

He is scheduled to be arraigned in Merrimack District Court in early-November.

Under state law, Smith could face up to seven years in prison, up to five years of probation and a fine of up to $4,000.
