Fiber optics coming to area

LYNDEBOROUGH – It’s been a long time coming, but fiber optics and highspeed Internet will be available in many parts of town this fall.

On Wednesday, Aug. 28, the Board of Selectmen met with Scott Brooks of TDS Telecom for an update. The company has been stringing cable since early summer.

“Up to 75 percent (of residents) will be able to connect,” Brooks said. “Our goal is 100 percent.”

At this time, the east part of town, the Milford end of Center Road, is not included.

A public hearing was scheduled for Sept. 25. An open house to acquaint people with the new options is also being considered.

The company will present several options for both residential and business use. Service to public buildings – town office, Police Department, fire Department, library – will be included in the package.

Brooks agreed the service had not come to town as early as expected – it was originally supposed to added when Wilton received it.

“We had some network issues,” Brooks said. “We are excited to finally be here.”

In other business on Wednesday, Selectmen said replacement of the roof of the former town barn has been completed, “on time and on budget,” and found to be totally satisfactory.

An insurance review of the present town barn has been completed and the report mostly favorable. Several changes have been made in the methods of storage of trucks and equipment.

“They recommend that we update the alarms,” Town Administrator Russ Boland said, and that is being planned. “They also suggest a sprinkler system, but that would be very expensive.”

The town has to upgrade its computer system from Windows 7 and that is being studied.
