Amherst voters reject $83M in school projects

With an unsettled national economy, voters were in no mood to approve major spending proposals put forth on the Amherst School District ballot Tuesday.

Voters rejected an article that called for the appropriating a total of $83 million to fund the construction of an addition, plus reconstruction and renovation of the Clark/Wilkins Elementary School, and the renovation of the Amherst Middle School.

The Clark/Wilkins project had a price tag of $51,678,000 and the Middle School work came in at $30,492,000.

Tom Gauthier was reelected to the Amherst School Board with 1,474 votes, while Jason White won an open seat with 1,178 votes. Challenger Greg Fritz had 866 votes and David Hall had 737 votes.

Incumbent board vice-chairman Elizabeth Kuzsma did not run for reelection to the Amherst board but was third in a four-way race for a three-year term on the Souhegan Cooperative School District board with 977 votes.

Anna Goulet Zimmerman won a three-year term, topping the slate with 1,596 votes while Daniel Veilleux won a three-year term with 1,518 votes. Jacob Macedo had 741 votes.

Incumbent Christine Peters won a one-year term with 1,534 votes to Kenneth D’Ambrosio’s 924.

Also on the Souhegan ballot, a warrant article to raise the district operating budget to $20,314,508 was defeated, leaving the default budget at $19,812,800.

George Bower was unopposed for School District Moderator.

On the Amherst Town Election ballot, Peter Lyon won 2,015 votes and Bill Stoughton had 1,691 as the only declared candidates to serve three years on the Board of Selectmen. Stephen Coughlan defeated Timothy Kachmar for town moderator, 1,615-721. Elizabeth Larson (1,651 votes). Gretchen Pyles (1,591) and David Hallenbeck (999) won three-year terms as library trustees. Stephen Mantius had 890 votes.

Planning Board members Tom Silva (1,742) and Tracie Adams (1,741)won three-year terms without opposition.

Cemetery trustee Cynthia Dokmo, trustee of the trust funds Robert Grunbeck, supervisor of the checklist Jeanne Ludt and zoning board of adjustment member Danielle Pray were all unopposed.

All warrant articles were approved except for No. 29, which would have added $75,000 to the Amherst Multimodal Facilities reserve fund. No votes prevailed 1,618-1,408.
