E-Reader program honors trustee

The Hollis Social Library is excited to make available two Nook Color e-Readers for library patrons to check out.

The purchase of these devices was made possible by a generous donation from the Library Trustees in honor of Howard Bigelow for his many years of service on the Hollis Social Library Board of Trustees.

Offering Nooks to Hollis Social Library patrons expands our book-lending formats by providing access to compact e-Readers that are capable of holding hundreds of books. We also hope it will provide people the opportunity to use a new tool to access the information that is important in their everyday lives.

Each Nook has an assorted collection of reading materials and applications loaded on them.

For those who enjoy fiction, you will find a selection of current bestselling titles. Non-fiction books include a collection of current titles covering such topics as cooking, gardening, history and biography.

For those with preschoolers or grandchildren who enjoy having picture books read to them, we have loaded some popular picture books for them to enjoy.

We have several magazines loaded on the Nooks that will appeal to a diverse group of people such as Popular Mechanics, Parenting, National Geographic and Women’s Health. For those of you looking for daily news, we have subscribed to the Boston Globe. Just think, you can go on vacation and bring the daily Boston Globe with you in your travel bag.

There are additional applications we have installed on the Nooks that are fun and practical. Test your vocabulary and math skills with crosswords and Sudoku. Stay in shape with daily workout applications, and if you are traveling try TripAdvisor for your hotel, restaurant and flight planning needs.

These devices will provide our patrons with an opportunity to try new technology and to checkout more than 35 books, magazines and newspapers all on one compact e-Reader.

The color Nooks may be checked out by patrons over the age of 18, with library cards in good standing (no fines or overdue items) and a valid ID. Patrons must also sign a borrower agreement and confirm contact information at the time of checkout. Nooks are lent out for two weeks and can be renewed once if there are no holds on the device.
