Early Civics: Children are Citizens

In the first part of this workshop, teachers will consider what it means to educate young children for social and civic engagement, learn about the work in the Boston Public Schools’ elementary classrooms, and design plans and materials for use in their own classrooms with Melissa Tonachel. The session will include interactive presentation and guided work with partners or small groups. Materials will include examples from the Boston Public Schools curricula, readings, and planning sheets. In the second part of this workshop, NH Partner Site Director of Mikva Challenge, Amanda Maguire, will present on Project Soapbox for grades K-5. Project Soapbox is a public speaking program facilitated by Mikva Challenge that calls young people to speak out on issues that affect them and their communities. The students are asked to research, prepare, and deliver a two-minute call to action speech answering the question: What is the most important issue facing your community? Breakfast and lunch will be provided.
