Vurlyne Evelyn Curtis

Vurlyne Evelyn Curtis passed away on May 14th 2022 after a brief period of declining health.

Born on August 5th 1929 in Francestown, NH to Ernest and Clarissa Foote, Vurlyne was raised on her family’s farm as one of 9 siblings. She enjoyed cooking beside her mother and was a daddy’s girl known for her frankness and fire-red hair.

Vurlyne was a go-getter. She graduated from New Boston High School in 1948 then met her future husband, a WW2 veteran named Frederick Curtis at a country dance, where she tagged him during a ladies-choice dance. The couple had three children: Edward, Dorothy, and Stephen.

She was family-focused, in general, and often included her much younger sister Nancy on family trips to places like Melvin Village. She was a stay-at-home mom until the day her youngest son began first grade, and then she started working at Kenmore Stamp in Milford, where she worked for 25+ years.

She was avidly social. She was a 4-H leader in her youth, and into her adulthood, participated in home economics events, was an officer of the River Lea Club in Milford, and a member of the Milford United Methodist Church.

Her greatest joy was her family. She and her daughter Dorothy baked and decorated wedding, birthday, and anniversary cakes for family and friends. She was famous with her grandchildren for her chocolate chip cookies, as well as within the family for her superior cooking skills.

After her husband passed in 1982, she frequently travelled with her sister Florence to their favorite spots in Vermont, and she delighted in passing time with her special needs granddaughter Courtney.

She spent several of her final years at Summerhill Assisted Living in Peterborough, where she loved the outstanding staff and made many friends.

She is survived by her son Edward Curtis; her daughter Dorothy Smith and her husband Herald Smith; her son Stephen Curtis and his wife Roberta Greeley-Curtis; her sister Florence DeLill; her brother Robert Foote; her sister Nancy Lamoureux; six grand-children; four great-grandchildren (and one on the way); and nieces and nephews; etc.

She is predeceased by her husband Frederick; her parents; five of her siblings: Minnietta, Lester, Clifton, Herbert, and Richard; and two of her grandchildren: Aaron Smith and Ashley Curtis.

Vurlyne will be buried in the North Yard Cemetery in Milford beside her beloved husband. Graveside services will be private at a date to be determined. She will be greatly missed.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to a scholarship fund in the name of Vurlyne’s granddaughter Ashley Curtis. Donations through checks payable to the Ashley S. Curtis and Richard D. Greeley Memorial Performing Arts Scholarship should be mailed to the Trustees of the Trust Fund at 1 Union Square Milford, NH O3055.
