Lois E. Butler

November 15, 1933 – August 3, 2023

Lois E. Butler, 89, passed away at Cottage Hospital on Thursday, August 3rd, 2023. She was born in Barre, Vermont on November 15th, 1933, to Sherman and Eleanor (Chalmers) Bragg. She grew up in Waits River, Vermont where she attended Waits River School until 8th grade, and then Bradford Academy where she graduated in 1951.

Lois had the best and hardest job there is, she made her house into a home and raised her 10 children with her husband Lawrence “Lefty” Butler. When her children were old enough to go to school, she worked for several years in the veneer mill in Bradford. The family moved to Milford, NH to work on the Curtis Dell Farm, living and working in the area from 1959 until moving back to the upper valley in West Topsham in early 80’s.

She wrote the Topsham News in the Journal Opinion for several years and was always very active in the New Hope Methodist Church, either cooking in the kitchen, volunteering for their food shelf, or attending bible studies.

Lois was known for her delicious meals, most of the ingredients grown right from her own garden. Her homemade pickles, jellies, jams, baked beans, bread and whoopie pies will surely be missed.

She is predeceased by her parents, Sherman Bragg, and Eleanor (Chalmers) Bragg; her husband, Lefty Butler; her daughters, Kimberly Slyvester, and Gayle Butler; a son, Kevin Butler; and two sisters, Marilyn O’Meara, and Lorrain Covey.

She is survived by seven sons, Roger Butler of Manchester, NH, Randall Butler and Rudeen of Richlands, NC, Rodney Butler and Betty of Aurora, NC, Kenny Butler and Regina of Richlands, NC, Jeff Butler of West Topsham, VT, Steve Butler and Jackie of West Topsham, VT, Matt Butler of Bradford, VT; a son-in-law, Richard Slyvester of West Topsham, VT; a sister, Dale Beans of East Orange, VT; a brother-in-law, Kermit O’Meara of East Orange, VT; 29 grandchildren; 46 great grandchildren; 8 great-great grandchildren; her best companion, Buddy the dog; and many loving nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

There will be a memorial service officiated by Rev. Randall Butler at the New Hope Methodist Church, Waits River, VT, on Sunday, August 6th, 2023, at 11 AM.
