Jo Ann K. Smith

Jo Ann K. Smith, longtime resident of Mont Vernon, NH, died at her home on Thursday, March 14, 2024, surrounded by her loving family.

She was born on January 1, 1942, in Louisville, KY, daughter of the late George and Dorothy (Metzger) Katzman.

Jo Ann was raised and educated in Louisville. She graduated from Atherton High School class of 1959 and went to Western College in Ohio where she graduated with a bachelor’s degree in 1963. She met and married Alan J. Smith at University Lutheran Church in Cambridge, MA, and together they have made their home in Mont Vernon since 1966.

In addition to raising three children and working as a bookkeeper, JoAnn was very active in the community over her many years in Mont Vernon. She served in a variety of leadership roles with the library study committees, high school building committees, Girl Scouts, and Mont Vernon Congregational Church, and was instrumental in establishing kindergarten in Mont Vernon. She also served as tax collector and was involved in the UNH home extension program and Amherst Garden Club. Above all, Jo Ann was passionate about spending time with her family and friends, as well as travel and gardening, and she will be greatly missed.

Survivors include her husband, Alan Smith of Mont Vernon; her children, Andrew and his wife Lisa Smith of Marysville, OH, Rachel and her husband Stephen Silver of Lebanon, NH, and Matthew and his wife Kelly Smith of Merrimack, NH; three grandchildren, Mason Smith, Lindsey Smith, and Chip Silver; and two brothers, Kenneth Katzman of MD and George Katzman of KY.

SERVICES: Calling hours will be held on Wednesday, March 20, 2024, from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM in the Smith & Heald Funeral Home, 63 Elm Street, Milford, NH 03055. A funeral service will be held on Thursday, March 21, 2024, at 11:00 AM in the Mont Vernon Congregational Church, 4 S. Main Street, Mont Vernon, NH 03057. For those unable to attend in person, the funeral will be live streamed on the Smith & Heald Funeral Home Facebook Page. Burial will be in the spring in Greenlawn Cemetery, Mont Vernon.
