Milford boys hoop hammers Merrimack

Not much has been going right for the Spartans boys basketball team so far this season but it looked like a different team that swamped the Merrimack Tomahawks on Monday by a score of 84-43.

To be sure, Merrimack is not the club that Exeter, Pinkerton or even Con-Val was.

In fact it is a very weak club, but as Coach (Mo) Facques pointed out afterwards, “when you win by 40 points you have to be doing something right.”

Facques was especially pleased with the way the team moved the ball up the floor.

When Merrimack tried to pressure the Spartans it worked in Milford’s favor. But perhaps the key was more than just execution.

Everyone played and everyone got into the scoring column. Because of the nature of the game it was more difficult to pick out an individual who really carried the burden because everyone did his share while in the fame.

Chris Pratt finished with 14 points while Richard Peno and Todd Hutchinson had 11 and Mike Thomas had 10.

Milford went on scoring sprees from eight to 15 points in every quarter, making it very difficult for Merrimack to fight back.

It was a nine-point burst in the first quarter that brought Milford from a 5-2 deficit to an 11-5 lead.

Vint Boggis, who only scored five points in the game scored them all within 30 seconds of one another and in so doing gave Milford a lead it never lost.

Twelve- and 15-point bursts in the second and fourth periods sealed the door shut.
