Milford girls capture Division III ski title

FEB. 22, 1973 – “Paced by sophomore Joan Hopkins in the slalom and freshman Sue Maguire in the giant slalom, Milford High School captured the girls Division III NHIAA state ski title in the state meet held last Thursday at Mount Sunapee.

“Competing against 16 other schools, Milford accumulated 168 points and narrowly nipped second-place Plymouth, which finished 166.9 points. Nashua was third with 156.6.”

FEB. 23, 1978 – “We’re Number One – again. For the second time in three years, coach Joe Kelley’s varsity girls have brought home a state basketball championship Saturday night as they knocked out previously undefeated and top-ranked Pembroke in a tight 41-38 contest in Concord.

“Kelly Conran finished as Milford’s leading scorer with 16 points, just one behind Pembroke’s top scorer. Sue LeBlanc and Diane Hatch each finished with six points. Lori Manzi had four points while

Mona St. Cyr, Lisa Johnson and Sandy Cadorette each had three points.”

FEB. 24, 1988 – “Jennifer Hodgen of Milford has been named to the 1988 New England Junior Olympic cross country ski team. She is one of four junior girls, agd 15 and 16, who were selected based upon points earned at United States Ski Association-sponsored qualifier ski meets held in New England.”

FEB. 25, 1987 – “For the past year, the Wilton girls basketball team has been haunted by the score of last year’s Class S championship game: Profile 30, Wilton 39. The possibility of a repetition of that game hung over Wilton like a curse as it trailed top-ranked Groveton through the first half of this year’s final Feb. 21 at the University of New Hampshire.

“By game’s end the Warriors had managed to exorcise the demon and win the 1987 Class S title, 33-29. … Carol Young led Wilton with 12 points, Kristin Vander Heyden had nine, Jen Nadeau had seven and Donna Albert had five.”

FEB. 26, 1992 – “Milford’s Justin Hammerstrom won the state championship in the 140-pound weight division, leading a group of six Milford wrestlers who qualified for next week’s Meet of Champions at Nashua High School.

“Also qualifying were Joe Faucher at 103, Ryan Trombi at 112, Tyler Schaff 130, Brian Kelly at 145 and Dennis Rector at 171.”

FEB. 27, 1981 – “Chris Erikson, 10, of Amherst finished second out of 24 players at the New England Lawn Tennis Association 12-and-under

Championships.

“Chris is coached by Alex Holder of Hampshire Hills Sports and Fitness Club, Milford. … He lost to Steve Glazer of Brookline, Mass., 4-6.”

FEB. 28, 2018 – “Junior James Raiser closed out his year at 24-14 and claimed fourth place overall in the meeting of the state’s top mat competitors at the NHIAA Wrestling Meet of Champions held at Nashua High School South.

“Raiser, at 126 pounds, came within whiskers of a trip to the New England Championships as the top three in each weight class qualify.”
