Merrimack soccer splits in 1st week

Merrimack 1, Nashua North 0

Merrimack got the season-opening home victory thanks to Devin Kachmar, who scored an unassisted goal in the 51st minute. Rich Bibeault and Connor Tess helped preserve the shutout by playing strong defense in front of keeper Ryan Gonzalez (four saves).

For North goalkeeper Brett Leblanc stopped eight shots, including some highlight reel saves, to keep the Titans in striking distance.

Pinkerton 2, Merrimack 1

Visiting Merrimack fell to 1-1 on the season after all the goals for both teams came in the first half. Merrimack got its lone goal from Alex Materkowski, asssisted by his brother Jordan. Tomahawks goalie Josh Knauer made 10 saves.

Merrimack 3, Nashua North 1

The Tomahawks won their season opener Friday after coming back from a 1-0 hole in the sixth minute thanks to a goal from Nashua North’s Marissa Gaudette assisted by Haleigh Drew.

Merrimack fought back to score in the 24th minute when Rachel Mack found Abby Morgan, who slipped one in to tie the game 1-1. Merrimack’s winning goal came off the foot of Cailin Field, which found the upper area on the far post. Jenna Chambers put the game away three minutes later off a pass from Morgan.

Merrimack’s defensive unit of Carissa Yim, Morgan, Emma Zanni and Gigi Wood were strong in front of keeper Emma Fay (10 saves).

Isabel Dunning had seven saves in net, while Sam Conrad played great defense for the Titans.

Pinkerton 5, Merrimack 0

The Tomahawks fell behind early against the defending Division I champions and never recovered, dropping to 1-1 on the season.
