Damata, Hovan off to New Englands

NASHUA – Together, Merrimack High seniors Julien Hovan and Dom Damata have accomplished so much on the wrestling mat the past four seasons. The two aren’t done yet.

Each has qualified for the New England Championships this weekend in Providence. The survivors punched their tickets here Saturday at Nashua South High School in the Granite State’s Meet of Champions.

Hovan was hoping to return to his second straight MOC finals, but he fell in the semis to the DIII state champ. Clearly the top gun in the consolations, he dominated both.

“I wanted to be in the finals, but I’m happy with third. I know what New Englands is this time around, what the wrestling will be like,” he said. “Now I want to get to the second day there. I didn’t do that last year. I’m excited about the chance to do it now.”

Damata has paid his dues and wasn’t about to let the wrestling season end. He stepped on the consolation mat and pinned his man in 46 seconds.

“He’s a solid kid, but I didnt underestimate him,” said Damata. “You have to believe in yourself. A (Division II) state championship and going to New Englands was my goal. It feels great to accomplish it. It’s a long season, but I really don’t want to let it end.”
