LYNDEBOROUGH – On Feb. 12, the Board of Selectmen joined several other towns in the area in naming March 30 the official Welcome Home Vietnam Veterans Day. They accepted a commemorative flag from Karen Blood, representing Josiah Crosby Chapter, D.A.R., of Milford, one of the local sponsors of the event.

Local veterans Paul Martin and Artie Napolitano were present to accept the flag. Napolitano was also presented with a pin. A packet of materials was presented to each of them, with packets left for other known veterans.

Martin is an active member of the state’s Purple Heart organization.

At their next meeting the board will have an official proclamation and a tentative dedication program prepared.

Blood said the observances are a belated thank you to Vietnam War veterans for their service and sacrifice, and also a recognition of people on the home front who supported them.

President Barack Obama officially opened the national 50th anniversary observance of the war on May 25, 2012. It will continue through 2025.

In other business on Wednesday, the board authorized Fire Chief Brian Smith to pursue a grant of to $66,000 toward the purchase of a fire truck, which he will do after town meeting.

The next meeting of the bord is Wednesday, Feb. 26, 6 p.m., in the town office.
