Lyndeborough Selectmen sign proclamation

On Wednesday, March 26, the Board of Selectmen signed a proclamation declaring March 30 Vietnam Veterans Welcome Home Day, in conjunction with the Josiah Crosby DAR of Milford. The DAR was represented by Karen Blood and Susan Patterson. Local veterans Walter Holland, Mark Schultz, Richard Herfurth and Artie Napalitano were present and received special pins.

Ceremonies will be held on both the Village Common, beginning at 5 p.m., and at the Center Hall where the Lafayette Artillery Company will fire their 1844 cannon. All veterans are invited.

In other business, Selectmen announced unpaved roads will be posted for weight limits on March, earlier than usual because of an expected “bad” mud season. Stone and gravel are being added to roads in North Lyndeborough.

The new street lights, in addition to now being where they are needed and down-cast, have reduced that expenditure by 75 percent. The old fixtures will be offered for sale, perhaps at Community Day. Selectmen noted how smoothly the street light upgrading project worked.

The Highway Department has an unused “fifth wheel trailer” to dispose of.

This year is the 285th anniversary of the land grant of Salem-Canada in 1735. All of Lyndeborough and parts of surrounding towns are included in that original grant from the Province of Massachusetts. It will be noted at Town Meeting and the Historical Society is planning a program for later in the spring.

The Heritage Commission will work with the Cemetery Trustees to place historic markers on the town’s older cemeteries that are now closed, beginning with the Forest Road Cemetery on route 31. Several gates are in need of repair.
