Combining fire and ambulance services discussed

WILTON – Moving the ambulance service into the fire station has again come up for discussion. Ambulance Director Sherrie Miller presented the idea to the Board of Selectmen on Monday (May 17) as a cost-saving measure. Why maintain two buildings when they can be housed in the same one?

Internet service needs to be upgraded, she said, and both could be done at once at a “considerable cost saving.”

She noted the deficiencies of the current ambulance bay on Forest Road. A vehicle running inside the building sends exhaust into the rest of the building. The fire station already has the needed exhaust system.

She said the sleeping quarters need to be divided into two and that could be accomplished at the fire station. The current building cannot be expanded because of conditions on the lot – wetlands, ledge, and nearness to Stoney Brook.

Fire Chief Don Nourse agreed that combing was all feasible, “but we’d have to rearrange some equipment.”

Selectman Kermit Williams said, since the ambulance is a multi-town service, Lyndeborough and Greenfield have to be consulted. “We can’t just do it.”

Miller said she had spoken with those selectmen.

He also said something “would have to be done with the current building,” which is owned by the three towns. “There are a lot of things to consider.”

Chairman Kellie-Sue Boissonnault said, “It can’t be discussed until after town meeting,” which will be held in June. She suggested a committee to “do a full study.”

That study will be made.

In other business on Monday, the board discussed needed repairs to the Frog Pond dam. A complete engineering study is being done as well as a hydrologic study. Part of the pond is in Milford and they will have to be included.

At the beginning of the swimming season, Sand Hill Road will be made one-way and the entrance to Garwin Falls closed. That date to be announced. Selectman Matt Fish said the parking lot needs to be addressed, but that will have to wait until town meeting and a budget is approved.

Reopening the “Still Good Shed” at the Recycling Center will be left to the discretion of Manager Carol Burgess. A separate building staffed by volunteers has been suggested.
