A dozen kids of all ages and their parents are the usual audience at Brookline Public Library Storytime, a gathering on Monday and Tuesday mornings that offers stories, songs and craft activities. Nevertheless, four participants shared the spotlight at a recent get-together.

Bettielue “Ms. Boo” Hill, children’s program coordinator, conducts the events with pizzazz and a well tuned sense of best practices for making entertainment and learning a cherished combo. The gatherings are themed with a variety of subjects. Related craft sessions have incorporated lessons about helping at home, kindness and friendship, along with recognizing nature through studying snowflakes, animals and birds.

The storytime scheduled for Feb. 18-19 will feature an introduction to the alphabet. Alligators made from colored paper may support learning about the letter, “A.” Zebras constructed from cardboard tubes may illustrate the letter, “Z.” It is suggested by Ms. Boo that kids wear clothing amenable to paint smudges and splotches of glue.

“It’s important for kids to experience the tactile sensations of painting and gluing and cutting with scissors,” Ms. Boo said. “They learn motor skills in a fun way.”

Meredith Bernstein and her daughter, Julie Bernstein, age 4, were among the quartet that attended the storytime on Feb. 11. Julie cut several paper hearts and added glitter glue and sequins for extra bling.

“I like how engaging this storytime program is for Julie,” Meredith said. “It’s good to get social time away from home, so we plan our Monday around this event.”

Danielle Molinari and her son, Sawyer Molinari, age 2, also participated. Sawyer was well versed at selecting his favorite colors from a bowl loaded with Crayons. He also was quick to name the color of each felt heart shown to the group by Ms. Boo during storytime.

“We come every week,” Danielle said. “It’s a great way for Sawyer to socialize with other kids and prepare for preschool as he’s learned his colors and numbers.”

Ms. Boo urged followers of the book series, “Fancy Nancy,” to check for upcoming details on a pending Fancy Nancy Fashion Show. The annual event is based on Jane O’Connor’s book, “Fancy Nancy.” A book reading, festivities for kids of age 4 or more who sign up, and a photo shoot has graced past shows.

“Hopefully, there’s something here for everyone who loves the library,” said Ms. Boo. “I’m in my fifth year here and I love what I do.”
