Merrimack seeks oldest resident to honor with Boston Post Cane

On Feb. 24, Carsten “Bud” Hahn, the current holder of the Boston Post Cane, passed away at the age of 101.

The town of Merrimack has begun the search for the oldest resident to become the new Boston Post Cane holder. The Boston Post Cane tradition started in 1909 when the Boston Post newspaper delivered the gold-headed ebony canes to 700 towns in New England and requested the canes be presented to the oldest citizen in town and passed on to the next oldest when he or she dies.

To qualify as the oldest resident, one must be a physical resident of Merrimack and have resided in Merrimack for at least 25 years.

If you qualify or know someone who does, send a nomination form to:

Town of Merrimack

ATTN: Boston Post Cane

6 Baboosic Lake Road

Merrimack, NH 03054

Nomination forms are available at www.merrimacknh.gov/bostonpostcane or at Town Hall. Please contact the Town Manager’s office with questions at 424-2331 or kwardner@merrimacknh.gov.

The town will be accepting nominations until Friday, June 29, 2018. Thank you for your help in locating our next holder of the Boston Post Cane.
