MERRIMACK — After eight months of vacancy, the 300-acre property at 221 Daniel Webster Hwy., formerly occupied by Anheuser-Busch, was recently sold to United Therapeutics Corp. for $47 million.

Based in Silver Spring, Md., the biotechnology firm was founded 30 years ago by Martine Rothblatt, who also founded Sirius XM. During the past three decades, United Therapeutics has specialized in developing treatments for rare, chronic illnesses such as Pulmonary Arterial Hypertension. These drugs include Tyvaso, Remodulin, Orenitram, Adcirca and Unituxin.

In addition to developing pharmaceuticals, the company has been on the leading edge of bioengineered organ manufacturing, gene-edited porcine organ transplant technologies and 3D bioprinting, which is used to alleviate the global shortage of organs.

According to the NASDAQ, United Therapeutics has a current market capitalization of $20.5 million.

The Merrimack location will join United Therapeutics’ Manchester site, which has been in operation since 2023.

The construction timeline and projected opening date have not been released.

Before closing in January, Anheuser-Busch had been one of Merrimack’s major employers for 55 years. In addition to its extensive brewing operation, the facility also had a tasting room, beer gardens and was the training ground for the famed Budweiser Clydesdales until 2018.

The facility had an assessed value of $35 million and paid the town more than $780,000 in annual property taxes. It was also one of Merrimack’s largest municipal wastewater consumers, which gave the town another $1.5 million in yearly utility fees.
