Couple supports Orde plan
To the Editor and Honorable Chairman Ed Makepeace of the Hollis Planning Board:
We write this letter in strongest support of Douglas A. Orde, 65 Silver Lake Road, Hollis, NH, in his pursuit of a Conditional Use Permit for a Proposed Landscape Materials Yard, and to be issued a Conditional Use Permit for 244 Depot Road, Hollis, NH.
We live at 7 Pierce Lane on property that was the Nartoff property. The property is very low and at the end of a mile downward hill from Broad Street. A pond had been dug for his cows very near to where our foundation would be, and the property is adjacent to Hollis Town Property. Before purchasing our land we had three areas of concern to consider: 1. Ponds breed mosquitoes; 2. Ponds flood, especially since this pond is the end point of melting snow from the one mile of Pine Hill Road properties; 3. The town of Hollis might build a school, transfer station or recreation area, or anything behind our home since they own this land.
After careful consideration, we bought the land, and have resided there for over 40 years.
The same consideration should have been taken by the neighbors around 244 Depot Road. The business was grandfathered since the 1950s and was in operation. We took the proper considerations of areas of concern into view when we purchased our land, as it was our responsibility. Neighbors to 244 Depot Road had the same opportunity.
The increase of trucks on Depot Road will not be noticed with this permit. Moren’s Landscape loads and sends 20-30 large, heavy duty trucks and trailers onto the roads from their property, which is only 1?4 mile from 244 Depot Road every day. The Stump Dump is almost across the street from 244 Depot Road and it receives many large trucks when it is open. The traffic will not be affected by the business at 244 Depot Road. It may be a convenience for residents to unload at the Stump Dump and then drive into 244 Depot Road, and receive needed landscape materials.
Although personal merit should not be considered, I have included my short list of all I know that Doug has done for the town of Hollis, NH.
He buries any large or small animal(s) at no cost to the owner as a way of allowing dignity to the pet and peace of mind to the owner.
He helped organize the Brian Spence fundraiser.
When Hollis had the ice storm, he was right there to assist the police and fire departments to assure safety for the residents. The NH State Department of Transportation did pay him, but he was hired because of his fine reputation for his attention to detail, quality of materials and work, and his dependability.
When work was needed to build the ball fields, track and playing fields: he had the lowest bid and to this day they are in good condition, proof of the high quality of his work.
