HB football falls to Jags

HOLLIS – The offensive numbers looked pretty impressive, with Hollis Brookline junior quarterback Joey Delaney roasting the Windham High School secondary for 333 passing yards.

Numbers alone don’t knock off programs like the state runner-up Jaguars.

"When you’re an underdog like we were, you just can’t make mistakes," HB coach Chris Lones said after the Cavaliers fell 40-14 to Windham in the teams’ Division II South opener on Saturday. "We moved the ball well against a very good football team, but to beat a team like that as an underdog, you have to finish drives. We just didn’t do that."

Delaney feasted, clicking on 25 of 36 passes for 333 yards and a pair of touchdowns, without an interception.

But a penalty here, and a miscommunication there, derailed the Cavs when it counted.

"He had a great day, but we have to be better and finish," Lones said.

Junior Matt Simco proved to be valuable, if not unstoppable, catching 12 balls for 183 yards in the busy afternoon.

Simco caught a 9-yard TD, and senior Brian Delaney had the other score on a 1-yard hookup. Leading rusher Jack Byrne (11 carries, 39 yards) added a two-point run.

All the while, the Jags offense steamed like a well-oiled machine.

Bulldozer Victor Pizzotti piled up 178 yards on 17 carries, leading Windham to 464 yards on the ground for the afternoon.

Pizzotti (two), Parker Belsky, Tommy Emrick, Brian Murzda and Tim Anderson all had rushing TDs for Windham.

The Cavaliers look for their first win of the fall on Saturday when they travel to Sanborn (0-1).
