Brilliant field competes at Korcoulis Invitational
HOLLIS – Hollis Brookline High School Athletic Director Rhon Rupp proudly took to the microphone Saturday morning for a quick history lesson.
He spoke of Elias “Coach Korcoulis,” his building of programs in athletics and yes, his amazing 16 state titles.
Of course, there was also some running to do on Saturday morning and meet director/Cavaliers cross country coach Don Boggis put together a superb field of over 300 boys and girls on a brilliant day to celebrate a legend.
There were supposed to be treacherous hills and a deep field of runners standing in her way. All that Milford High’s Becca Durham saw for competition was history on Saturday.
The senior dominated the 71-runner field in the varsity girls race of the Coach Korcoulis Invitational, crushing the previous course record by covering the 5K in a rousing, 18:39, to capture the championship.
Her winning margin was nearly two full minutes over the nearest foe, Oyster River’s Danielle Slavin, who was second in 20:37.
“No secret, I just ran. I didn’t run a PR, but my coach just told me to go get the course record,” said Durham.
“I was told there were a lot of hills here, but I didn’t see them, I just run.
