Eugene J. Carlin

Eugene J. Carlin, 91, of Bedford, NH passed away Saturday, January 27, 2018. He was born on December 20, 1926 in Brooklyn, NY, to Eugene J. Carlin Sr. and Mabel O’Brien. He attended the St. Vincent Ferrer Elementary School, Brooklyn Technical High School and the Polytechnic Institute of Brooklyn at NYU.

Following high school, he served in the U.S. Navy during WW II. He was assigned to the USS Ulysses, which was deployed to the Pacific Theatre at Okinawa. Upon his return from the war, he attended college and received a Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering. He then joined the Catholic Foreign Mission Society of America as a Maryknoll Brother. He gave the Brothers 10 years of service, both in the United States and abroad as a construction supervisor. Subsequently, he was employed by Baybutt Construction Corporation of Keene, NH for 18 years, and a headhunter brought him to Eckman Construction in Bedford, NH as a Project Manager and Estimator in 1986. He concluded his professional career with Stabile Construction, where one of the highlights of his work was as Chief Estimator for the new construction of the Manchester/Boston Airport.

He was a member of St. Elizabeth Seton Church in Bedford, NH for the last 30 years, and a prior parishioner of St. Bernard’s Church of Keene, NH for 25 years. He was a lifelong member of the Knights of Columbus both in Keene and Bedford, and lastly in council 12988. He served as a past Grand Knight and was a recipient of the 4th degree. He was the chairman of the Keene Building Board of Appeals for 10 years and is a past president of the New Hampshire Chapter of the Associated General Contractors.

Gene was a loving husband, father, and grandfather. He was also a man of strong faith. He was a staple in his community, an active volunteer, and he lived for the New England Patriots, Red Sox, and Notre Dame. His last game was the AFC championship. He was also a lover of gadgets and technology, and “Jack-of-all-Trades, and a Master of Many…” As a true Irishman, he could sing and tell a good joke. Always a twinkle in his eye.

He was predeceased by his parents. Gene is survived by his wife of 56 years, Pauline Huang Carlin; three sons, Christopher (and Reem) of Lincolnwood, IL, John (and Valerie) of Aspen, CO, Joseph of Arlington, VA.; two daughters, Diane Sims (and Michael) of Midland Park, NJ, and Mary Lepke (and Steve) of Wakefield, MA; and 12 grandchildren: Madison, Rachel, Savannah, Phoebe, Erika, Chris, Matthew, Althea, Yasmine, Henry, Adam, and Gabriela. The family would like to thank the Manchester VNA hospice for the loving care given to Gene.

Visitation will be held on Friday, Feb 9 from 3:30 to 6:30 p.m. at the McHugh Funeral Home, 283 Hanover St. corner of Beech St. in Manchester. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday, Feb 10 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Elizabeth Seton Church, 190 Meetinghouse Rd. in Bedford. Inurnment will be at the NH State Veterans Cemetery in Boscawen at a later date. Memorial donations in Gene’s name may be made to the New Hampshire Food Bank, 700 E.
